The YaYas

              Steve Hammer excerpt from Nuvo:
         "
I'd never  heard of this local band  when their CD-R arrived at our office. After a bit of investigation, I've still never heard of them. But this is a great song, with more than a hint of classic-rock influence, from the Robert Plantlike vocals to the guitar work, which reminds one of Neil Young. It could be a more well-known band in disguise. Could it be the US3? The Why Store? Who knows? More to the point,  who cares?  With music this good, you don't need to know anything other than it rocks."

               Follow-Up from Nuvo:

"I was blown away by a song by the YaYas on the NUVO MP3 Web site. At the time, I thought the band name might be a pseudonym for someone else, because the band had a familiar sound. After running that review, I received an e-mail from the band, who advised me that they are a real and non-pseudonymous group made of veterans of the local music scene. The band currently contains lead vocalist/guitarist Andrew Dyken, bassist Tom Esterline (formerly with Blind Otis' Lost Highway and currently with Vinyl Shriner) and drummer Roger Ray. Their song on the NUVO site is a brilliant take on modern rock. "

8/2004 Steve Hammer review from Midwest Music Summit performance at the Alley Cat:

"These veteran rockers looked so different from the last time I saw them, approximately four years ago. I didn't recognize them. But what I did recognize was some damned intelligent rock and roll, kind of a poor man's Elvis Costello, from the era when EC still had some balls. This band should be playing shows every week, not hiding out. "

Chris Collins review from MMS show:

" These dudes are a very cool rootsy trio whose guitarist was a spitting image of a somewhat thinner Jack Black. This was a band that makes such a serious groove that it doesn't have to take itself too seriously. Great bass lines underneath some truly accomplished yet subtle guitar work figures prominently in a typical Ya Ya number. One got the feeling that their stuff was constantly building up to something, some sort of jammy peak, but that it intentionally never summited. It was like this half-hour slot was a good warm-up for the rest of their live show, when things could get dangerous. It was over before it started. "
